Samba

If the network has both MSWindows PC desktops and UNIX servers, Samba is an absolute necessity.  Rather than using telnet or VNC to work with server-based editors and compilers, developers can use Windows Explorer with their favorite desktop development system to directly access files on the server.  Use of Samba and drive-mapping eliminates the need for FTP and the infamous edit-compile-FTP-test scenario.

Samba is an Open Source SMB/CIFS server implemented in ANSI C which is available in source and pre-compiled binary forms for nearly every conceivable platform (including MVS).  My recommendation is to compile the latest version of the source, as this ensures compatibility with the server OS patch-level.
