Why it matters

To avoid wasted money and frustration.

Regardless what solution is used, there is a significant amount of training and management time involved.  This time equates to money.  Money which is spent on certain solutions will be regarded a wise investment in the future, whereas money which is spent on certain solutions will be the basis of regret.  A careful study of the available technologies and ramifications is required to avoid wasted money.

Frustration comes from changing directions too often or from not changing direction often enough.  The basis of this frustration comes from a basic need to have some sense of accomplishment that transcends our paycheck.  We all want to feel that we are making a contribution instead of getting jerked around by the whim of industry pundits and advertising budgets.

By making a wise investment in web technology, we can prepare to change direction just often enough to deal with changing business needs and yet provide a stable base of expertise so that technology workers don't become obsolete before they become experts.

Update!!! 8/27/00 In the months following the introduction of WELD, it has become clear that the Apache Struts Project is well on it's way to becoming a standard. While WELD may provide a simple alternative to other templating techniques, it's author fully endorses the use of Struts and the custom tag creation facilities of JSP 1.1. These developments represent a significant improvement over the original JSP, which (in the opinion of the owner of this site) renders other techniques obsolete... including WELD.
